Did I say RROD?

Since my post of getting the RROD, my broken XBox 360 has been sitting on the console table behind the couch, collecting dust.  Why should I just let it sit there when I can try to fix it right?  Well, considering that the unit is out of warranty, I had no problems cracking it open and tackling the job.

With the help of others on the internet that have attempted to fix the RROD, I followed their lead and gave it a shot over the weekend.  My brother in law, Anthony, and I headed off to Lowe's and Home Depot to pick up some parts for the task at hand.  I had to get a few machine screws and washers that I would be using to replace the existing heat sink clamps that are used in the XBox 360.  After taking apart the machine (and digging in the trash for the just purchased parts) I proceeded to take off the heat sinks and clamps, cleaning off the old thermal paste.  I applied a fresh glob of paste and attached the heatsinks with the hardware that was purchased.  Instead of putting everything back together, I wired up the motherboard so it would turn on so that I could overheat the chips and hopefully allow for the solder joints of the GPU to reconnect.

After overheating, I unplugged everything and put the machine back together.  Well, what do you know...  It WORKS.  I now have the older XBox 360 in the master bedroom to use for occasional gaming and for use as a Media Center.  Whoo!
